Biomedical Signal Processing and Modeling
In this work, signal processing, stochastic processing, modeling and other engineering skills are used to study the electrical activity of skeletal muscles (know as the EMG). A major are of specialization has been developing techniques for improving estimates of the EMG amplitude (particularly during noisy and nonstationary conditions). In addition, high-resolution EMG can provide information about the activity of fundamental contractile structures within the muscle. Applications of these technologies include myoelectric control of powered prostheses (artificial elbows, wrists and hands), musculoskeletal modeling, ergonomics and the rehabilitation and monitoring of neuromuscular diseases (e.g., stroke).
Biomedical Instrumentation
In support of biomedical signal processing and modeling studies, there is a need to develop a variety of instrumentation - generally for real-time acquisition and processing of biomedical signals. Depending on the project, this work can involve a wide range of skills, including analog design, real-time programming, analog-to-digital interfacing, digital design and packaging.
