A Message From the Department Head

Electrical and Computer Engineering enjoys a long tradition of innovation in its undergraduate program together with selectivity and excellent quality at the graduate level. In the M.S. Program, and particularly at the Ph.D. level. There is a tradition of close working relationships and shared scholarly interests between students and thesis advisors.

Areas of academic and Research concentration reflect the specialties and expertise of the faculty. In the past several year, we have added faculty and Research programs in wireless communicating, Cryptography and data security, computer networks and Analog microelectronics. These complement a substantial history of work in image processing, biomedical applications of electrical engineering, and power systems. New Courses, particularly those in areas related to computer and wireless information networks and VHDL, are constantly being added.

Details of the faculty Research programs are presented later in these pages. The expertise, wide range of interests, and sense of excitement of the faculty should be apparent from these Research descriptions. We hope that as a graduate student, you will share our intellectual curiosity and will benefit from our educational and Research programs. Our graduate course offerings have been planned to provide the theoretical foundation for the specific Research topics, as well as to provide you with a broad Background for further learning.

Located in the Massachusetts high-tech belt, Opportunities for industrial support and summer jobs, as well as for permanent employment after graduate are numerous. If you have any questions regarding graduate studies, please email the graduate student liason [Professor Peder Pedersen, pedersen@ece.wpi.edu], the faculty in the Research area in which you are interested or myself. Also, we invite you to visit the department and meet some of our faculty and graduate students.

Dr. Fred J. Looft, Head
