Graduate Handbook - 1. Introduction

Welcome to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering!

This Graduate Handbook was created to answer many of the questions that have arisen over the years in regard to all facets of graduate education as offered and implemented by the ECE Department. Located within this Handbook are three different types of information.

First, you will discover specific rules and regulations concerning the graduate program. For the most part, these rules and regulations are common to all graduate departments on the WPI campus. However, some pertain directly to the ECE Department. Please become familiar with them and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact the department Graduate Coordinator (Prof. Fred J. Looft, fjlooft@ece.wpi.edu) for further assistance.

Second you will find course and faculty Research information. By its very nature, this information changes from year to year. What is presented in this edition of the Handbook has been revised and updated and, in addition, includes the Computer and Communications Networks (CCN) Specialization and the Computational Engineering in Electromagnetics and Acoustics Specialization Courses as well as all faculty listings and Research interests.

Third, you are provided with updated lists of department Resources. These include faculty offices, email addresses, who to contact if you need help, staff support information, computer Resources listings, course textbooks and a host of other useful lists.

We hope you find this book both interesting and beneficial. If you have any suggestions for information to include, or a better way to present the information contained herein, please let us know by contacting either the Dept. Graduate Coordinator (fjlooft@ece.wpi.edu) or the Dept. Graduate Secretary (lpcamp@ece.wpi.edu).

1.1 Programs

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.

Two relatively new routes to the M.S. degree are available via the Computer and Communications Networks program, offered jointly with the Computer Science Department and the Computational Engineering in Electromagnetics and Acoustics. Detailed information is provided below on both of these majors.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree program is available to exceptional students who demonstrate competence in their chosen area of study and present a dissertation based on original Research.
